Culex  mosquitoes are too often regarded as difficult to distinguish, “little brown mosquitoes” when in fact there are many unique characters which can separate Culex species  quite readily. I created the following key for mosquito professionals working in New Jersey and the northeastern USA to help facilitate training and the identification of this medically important mosquito genus.
